Rail Industry and Local Community Mark 25th Anniversary of Hatfield Rail Crash
17/10/2025

A special memorial event has been held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Hatfield rail crash.
On 17 October 2000, a GNER InterCity 225 train bound for Leeds left London King's Cross shortly after midday and derailed at Hatfield in Hertfordshire. Four people lost their lives and more than seventy people were injured.
Today (Friday 17 October 2025), representatives from GNER’s successor, LNER, family members of those who died, and the local Hatfield community came together for a private memorial service at Hatfield House, before wreaths were laid at the memorial garden situated alongside the East Coast Main Line.
David Horne, Managing Director at LNER, said: “It has been a poignant day – one of reflection and unity, as family members of those who died, former colleagues and the community have come together to remember the events of 25 years ago.”
